Simple Things

October 23rd, 2012 by zoe No Comments

Sometimes it’s the simple things that go over big. I love that.

In the middle of a hike they found a rock to jump off…..over and and over again. I plopped down onto a bed of fallen leaves and took action shots.

Fall is hunting season here in New England – you must wear your neon in the woods!

Weekending with Boys

September 22nd, 2012 by zoe 1 Comment

We are having one of those special cozy kind of week ends. We lit our first fire in the woodstove, mostly for the romance but it was the perfect nod to the first day of Fall. Cozy business having a crackling fire ablaze in the living room.

The boys snuggled up and I finished reading them Danny the Champion of the World by Roald Dahl. Great book, simply great. But at the very end we found this –  I love the thought of authors imparting a special life message to kids at the end of a book.

Hum, sparky huh.

Next up – make your own pizza.

I make dough and cook up pizzas often but today I gave each boy his own dough and they made their own little pizza’s. It was so simple but they were floored by the whole thing. They kept complementing one another “Wow, Emmett you did such a good job on your  pizza”.

Next up a movie night, we watched and simply loved  The Black Stallion . I think I saw it as a child but I cant say enough about how beautiful and simple it is.

I guess it’s turning out to be a boy’s adventure story kind of weekend. Might have to throw some Pippy Long Stockings in there tomorrow to level the whole thing out!

Happy first day of Fall to all!

School Picture Day!

September 21st, 2012 by zoe No Comments

Am I crazy, I stayed home from a weekend at the lake because I didnt want my boys to miss school picture day? Yup, crazy.

School pictures seem to turn out simply horrid. But, that is pretty much what makes them …AWESOME! I know without a doubt the fake smiles each of my boys will make. I know they will have a bit of dirt or food on their faces and that their hair will most likely stand on end.

Say it again, AWESOME. With a laser light background or… new this year, the planet earth background.

Around here the Mr. still has a bit of fun with my fifth grade class photo, he tapes it onto cutout fashion ads – hung on the fridge it pretty much cracks us up daily.

We could not miss school picture day!

5 Minute Super Mom

September 20th, 2012 by zoe 2 Comments

Do you have have any little tricks that make you feel like you accomplished a ton in a really short amount of time. You know the little things that made you feel all rock star with like zero effort? Dropping off 5 trash bags of clothes at the Salvation Army for instance makes me feel like doing a back flip and only takes a few minutes.

After a couple years of backlog I finally ordered REAL PRINTED photos!! As in tangible objects I can hold in my hands and flip through longingly perusing my children’s sticky fingered little moments. And man did it feel good! I felt like super mom looking through at all the 3.5 million photo’s.

Time spent, 15 minutes

Payback, HUGE - It felt like a truckload of love came to the freekin door.

Oh, and I actually rather like untraditional type photographs of families and children. Shots where you see more or less than the standard smiling show of perfection, maybe even just a mood. Sometimes I worry that with the ease of digital cameras we might loose the very pictures that in time would facinate us the most. The shot above was our last day of Summer swimming at the town beach, we thought all our friends would be there but instead it was pretty quiet, we kept talking about how it was a “good-bye to Summer day”. It really felt like the end of a great Summer.

School & Flowers

Fall has been getting off to a good start.

We harvested 20 plus pounds of potatoes from the garden, made a beach at the lake, swam till we could swim no more, and started “real school”.

The grown up folk did some major agonizing about what, where and when in the education department so hearing daily proclamations of “I LOVE my SCHOOL” and watching the littles skip to class through lush gardens with big ol’ smiles on their faces has been pretty epic. Cue Parents high fiving.

I have actually had a few days to work in my studio and started with a flurry of projects and hope to visit here with more gusto as my life hits some semblance of rhythm.

Ha! That is before everyone starts getting colds and the sprouts go and change their minds about the whole liking school thing!

In the mean time I am continuing with my latest house mission, I call it – DOWN WITH BROWN. That’s right brown, I have you in my sights and I am coming after you!

School Boys!

Oy! Today was the first day of kindergarten for my twin boys.

I dont know what the heck got into to me but I barely slept last night, I am pretty sure I woke up every hour to see what time it was! For some reason in my midnight haze I got it into my head that we would oversleep and be late the first day!

Some serious mommy jitters.

Luckily we all made it there, without incident, and the boys settled into their classrooms instantly.

Here is what I will say about sending your babies off to school for the very first time —

it’s emotionally exhausting!

I’m sure next year I will be high five-ing other parents and speed racing away from school but this year I am mostly a blubbering mess.
