The Art Hutch

June 12th, 2011 by zoe No Comments

Awhile back my in laws had way too much fun at an auction.  It took place in the grassy lawn of an old Vermont Victorian and apparently there were many deals to be had because they got carried away and bought a truckload of stuff.  More furniture than they actually had room for, I was lucky enough to score my favorite piece in the bunch – this here hutch!

We store our heaps and heaps of art supplies in it. The boys and I spend many a day sitting at the dining room table coloring, painting and drawing while winter storms bellow at the door. Often times it’s hard to set a project a side when it’s time for shifting gears to eating. We needed a better spot for crafting!!   Lately I have been on a bit of a redecorating bender and decided we needed to have our very own art table – so by shifting the art hutch into a new spot we have a whole new space for projects in the house.

With three days of cold and rain, we are already putting our new space to work!

Easy Painted Signs

June 8th, 2011 by zoe 4 Comments

The Mr. in these parts has dreamed of building a treehouse for MANY years.  This particular tree house book has been dog-eared and gazed upon with dreams for the future long before there were any tree house occupants in our lives.  One week last summer the DaDa in these parts got into his favorite sort of mischief and made his “fort in a tree” dreams come true. With a fair bit of reclaimed lumber and recycled windows he built a fabulously sturdy house 8 feet up, between the crook of two evergreens. Complete with a ladder swing, rope hoist, doors and gates. It is truly a treehouse palace!  This week the boys and I got to work on some of our ideas to make it extra special.  On a scrap of wood we used masking tape to spell out “kids only”. I gave them some paint with instructions to cover the wood all over.  We were impatient so we used a hair dryer to get the paint to tack up and when the paint was just a tiny bit dry we pulled off the tape to reveal our new sign.  Next the boys decided they needed to fly a pirate flag – with a bit of fabric scraps I sewed one up with simple zig zag stitching and embellished it with skull and cross-bone applique.  I’m thinking this tree house is looking mighty cool!

Make a Fun Coloring Card

June 4th, 2011 by zoe No Comments

The boys call this Peekaboo Surprise.  It’s  inspired by something my Mother made me when I was four or five, she sent it in the mail and arrived marked “from a secret admirer”!!  I remember there was a nickel taped behind one door, and a sun drawn under another.  Just about the coolest thing a kid could ever get in the mail!  These we are using for a Father’s Day card with our Happy Gift Coins tucked behind the doors.

To make your Peekaboo Surprise Card cut out doors and glue a solid sheet of paper to back.  Cut and color images, glue behind each door.  We used a colored card stock but any paper will be fun fun fun!!

Sometimes it’s hard to find the right gift, sometimes you just forgot, and sometimes favors are the very best thing!

For all those reasons and more I made these Father’s Day gift coins – I offered up a few of the favorites at our house, but you can add your own too.
