A Porcupine came to lunch!

August 20th, 2012 by zoe 1 Comment

We were having lunch on the deck and I looked out and saw a big old porcupine hanging out in a tree in the backyard!

On closer inspection there was a little baby in the next tree over. They didnt seem to mind the many pairs of eyes spying on them from down below. They continued with their napping and munching. Sweet little critters!

I learned a bit more about porcupines here and here, old world and new world porcupines — who knew? And that baby porcupines are called ”porcupettes”!

I was surprised to see the little baby off in it’s very own tree but apparently porcupines are ready to go off on their own at a mere 2 months old. Like wow.

Animals are so cool.

So adorable. We caught site of one on a hike earlier this year and stood and watched it for a while. It didn’t even mind that our dog was sniffing at the tree with a lot of interest. Though I always hear horror stories about people’s dogs getting quilled…That might make me think they were a little less cute.

I actually posted my porcupine pic from that hike here: http://mommyrepeat.blogspot.com/2012/03/day-out-of-town.html
